The Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) is a mechanical circulatory support device that provides cardiac assistance to critically ill cardiovascular patients by inflating and deflating a balloon placed in the descending aorta.The Indications include AMI complicated by severe heart failure or CS,refractory angina, HR-PCI, and Bridge-to-transplant therapy.

 

The IABP addresses the critical issues of reduced cardiac output and inadequate coronary perfusion caused by left ventricular dysfunction. By enhancing blood flow and optimizing myocardial oxygen supply-demand balance, it provides rapid, effective, and controllable left ventricular support, significantly reducing morbidity and mortality rates in severe conditions such as myocardial infarction and cardiogenic shock.
